Ralph Waldo Emerson Over the Labor Day Weekend, I made a big breakthrough in overcoming a nascient, prescient fear of heights. Zip-lining, and the support of my family and some new friends got me through it. I've had a fear of heights.freefall heights.since I was five. The fear shows up every now and then.mostly, when I've been standing at the top of a mountain (in California), and driving on Route 1 (also in California.) There are no guard rails on Route 1. Nor are there guard rails on mountains. You're there at your own risk.

That kind of risk scares me. I'd love to parachute one of these days, but every time I've worked up the courage to consider it, I read about somebody dying on their first jump. Fear started for me when I was five.

My parents took our family to O'Hare Airport. Not to travel.just to watch the planes take off and land.

We were using the escalators to go down to the first floor. I surveyed the vast expanse of the floor, and the waterfall-like contraption that would get me there. It looked like it was miles below to get down to the next floor. I looked over the railing.and froze. The size of the drop scared me, and I got dizzy from looking down into the vast expanse of hard floor below me.

'Daddy, I'm scared,' I whispered. 'I'm going to fall.' He looked at me and took my hand. 'You're not going to fall,' he said, firmly. I gripped his hand and the rail so tightly, my knuckles (and Dad's) were white.

Overcoming fears is good for the soul.cleansing like the Michigan beaches! After that, fear came and went, depending on the size of the drop. The bigger the drop, the greater the fear. For some reason, I never froze on airplanes, elevators, or any other object involving ascent and descent. I don't recall feeling fear in the glass elevators of Water Tower Place, the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, or any other glass elevator, even though I could see all the way down. I froze only when there was an open space to drop. As long as I am in this life, I am here to overcome my fears.

And I decided to tackle it head-on over Labor Day Weekend. A perfect opportunity presented itself when our family made our annual journey to the YMCA's Camp Tecumseh, right outside of Lafayette, Indiana.

Zip-lining is part of the family activities package. So I signed up. Lots of teens and pre-teens had signed up, too, along with some parents. Most went by pairs. My second half, Ted, opted out due to health reasons. He promised to be there when I landed. He gave me a hug and walked to the other side of the lake.

Instead, I was paired with a little boy named Carlos. As we were climbing up a winding four flights of metal stairs, to the top of the Zipline tower, we made acquaintance with each other. 'Hi, Carlos,' I said, 'Have you done this before?'

'Only once,' he said. 'Well, this is my first time,' I told him. 'I'm kinda nervous. How about you?'

'Sure, I'm nervous,' he said, very cheerfully, 'But I'm doing it anyway.' 'Well, I have a latent fear of heights,' I told him. 'But I'm doing it anyway, too!' 'Don't worry.' As we climbed the stairs, I felt the knot tighten in my stomach.

My knees went weak. When we got to the top of the tower, I saw what looked like a miles-long freefall into rocks and grass at the river's edge. I started shaking.

Straight down, I could visualize me tumbling to earth from the platform high above the rocks. All I had to do was lean to my right a little too far.and poof.I would be gone. 'Can you tell how nervous I am?' I asked the instructor, Brad (who was cute in a scruffy Ryan Gosling way.) 'You're perfectly safe. I guarantee you,' he said, strapping me into a harness and locking it. As I looked across the water, I saw some familiar forms in a boat that came to rest in the water below.Ted's granddaughters Mia and Marisa, their friend Maggie, and cousin Darryl. They are so special to me.

'Dear Jesus, I can't look bad in front of the kids. I can't be a bad example to them. Please give me strength to do this. ' I prayed under my breath. 'Just step out onto the platform,' said Brad.

'Believe me, you'll be fine. The harness's holding you. ' Across the way, Carlos yelled, 'You can do it, Alison! We'll do it together!' And below, I heard 'Go, Alison!, Go, Alison!'

From the boat. With all that encouragement, I stepped out onto the platform and gripped the back, still visibly shaking and looking down at the vast expanse of earth beneath me. And then, a still, small voice in my head said, ' Just look ahead.

I obeyed the still, small voice that sounded biblical enough. Straight ahead, I saw the opposite shore.and Ted. It calmed my soul and brought peace. 'Okay, on the count of three.One.two.three.ZIPPPPP!,' Brad yelled.

I gripped the handles of the zipline, took a giant leap.and I was off!! I was flying.flying over the lake.Sheer exhilaration replaced the fear in my soul. Brad was right.this ride felt like I was in a steady chair. I felt no danger, no panic. Just exhilaration.

I screamed in delight.all the way across the lake. I came in for a perfect landing. Breton, another guide, unstrapped my harness.

I came over to Carlos. 'You get a hug, buddy!' I told him, 'Thanks for getting me through this!' He hugged me back. He said, laughing. I am grateful for all the support that day.

But I am most grateful for listening to the still, small voice that gave me Peace. Next up: Parachuting!

The difference is, they enjoy the mainstreaming of their music and respond with one of their catchiest sets of songs. There's nothing new on the record apart from their willingness to polish their music so it reaches the widest audience. That will alienate whatever hardcore followers they have left, but that attitude will likely please anyone brought aboard with ' and 'Iris'.' Track listing All tracks written by, except where noted.
